Coronary Stents and the Stenting Process
Coronary stenting is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat blocked or narrowed coronary arteries, restoring blood flow to the heart muscle. At Temple Health, we specialize in providing comprehensive stenting services, utilizing advanced technology and a multidisciplinary team of experts to ensure optimal outcomes for our patients.
Coronary Stents
Coronary stents are small, mesh-like tubes made of metal (usually stainless steel or cobalt-chromium) or polymer that are inserted into narrowed coronary arteries during an angioplasty procedure. Stents help to keep the arteries open and prevent them from re-narrowing after the angioplasty.
The Stenting Process
Preparation: Before the procedure, you will receive local anesthesia to numb the area where the catheter will be inserted. You may also be given medications to help you relax.
Angioplasty: The stenting process typically begins with an angioplasty procedure, where a small balloon at the tip of a catheter is inflated to widen the narrowed artery and compress the plaque against the artery walls.
Stent Placement: After the artery has been widened with angioplasty, the coronary stent is inserted into the artery over a deflated balloon. Once in position, the balloon is inflated, expanding the stent and pushing it against the artery walls. The stent then locks into place, holding the artery open.
Balloon Deflation and Removal: Once the stent is in place, the balloon is deflated and removed, leaving the stent securely in position to keep the artery open.
Completion of Procedure: After the stenting process is complete, pressure is applied to the insertion site to prevent bleeding. A bandage is applied, and you are monitored for a short period before being transferred to a recovery area.
Benefits of Coronary Stenting
Improved Blood Flow: Coronary stenting effectively restores blood flow to the heart muscle, relieving symptoms such as chest pain (angina) and shortness of breath.
Reduced Risk of Complications: Stenting helps reduce the risk of complications associated with blocked or narrowed coronary arteries, including heart attack and stroke.
Long-Term Success: Stents provide long-term support to keep the arteries open, reducing the need for repeat procedures and improving overall heart health.
